Scotland’s John Dewar & Sons, released the Aberfledy 16YO as part of its Last Great Malts of Scotland initiative in 2015. This Highland distillery was founded back in 1898 by the Dewar family and uses the Pitilie Burn, a river which runs alongside it, as its water source. The Burn is also called “The Golden Dram”, as it’s renowned for being rich in mineral deposits including alluvial gold.
This bottling was intended for eleven markets globally – not including Australia, however we have managed to secure limited stocks of this aged single malt. The Aberfeldy 16YO is matured in Bourbon barrels but finished entirely in Oloroso Sherry casks, the latter imparting a delicious sherry sweetness to the whisky, with extra notes of dried fruits and spice.
Aberfeldy’s house style is described as rich, smooth and accessible with an emphasis on notes of honey. It passes through a long fermentation time of 70 hours allowing for greater flavour development by the creation of more esters which in turn give the whisky fruitiness.
- 89.5 Points - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2019
"Light, leathery and with a citrus freshness; succulent, with a ripe melon sweetness meeting an earthier, almost semi-phenolic, substrata; a beautiful match, should recede in layers. Yet, despite some lingering sugars, fades with a surprising flatness; finishes far too fast and tamely. But the thrust of the malt is wonderful." - Jim Murray
