Sparkling Wine History
Sparkling wine began as “vin gris” in France. By happenstance in the 1600’s, bottles of wine were shipped and underwent an additional and accidental fermentation in the process, giving the wine a bubbly bite. Two monks known as Dom Perignon and Frere Jean Oudart were the first known intentional makers of the drink that became known mostly as “Champagne.” Only bottles produced in the Champagne region gained the prestigious name.
