The Knappstein philosophy is to simply produce the best of Clare Valley in handcrafted wine & beer. Located in the heritage listed Enterprise Brewery, established in 1878, Knappstein is steeped in the traditions of Clare. Knappstein’s range of wines reflects the distinctive quality of premium Clare Valley fruit. Winemaker Glenn Barry crafts vibrant wines reflective of site and variety that showcase quality fruit at its purist level without overt, heavy-handed winemaking.
The majority of the fruit is from our Yertabulti Vineyard which is on an elevated site east of the town Clare. The Shiraz vines on the “Terra Rossa” soils are naturally very slow yielding and always display outstanding intensity and varietal character. A Shiraz of great intensity, weight and style, intense aromas of red and darker blue fruits are complex by highlights of cinnamon and five-spice. Persistent in flavour and balanced by fine sandy tannins and spicy french oak. The palate is vibrant and textured displaying flavours of red fruits and liquorice as well as classic Clare Valley choc-mint flavours. Firm but fine grained tannins.

"The brilliance of the purple-crimson colour is a repetitive theme in the '12 vintage, as is the sheer brightness and vibrancy of the fruit flavours, here black cherry, blackberry and a well of spices, garden herbs and fresh-tuned garden earth are all on parade, tannins and oak also discretely doing their thing." James Halliday 2012.
‘’Strong purple-crimson; the medium- to full-bodied palate seems to have one foot in McLaren Vale, with its savoury dark chocolate nuances, the other in the Clare Valley with its ripe plum and blackberry fruit; common to both are the firm tannins that provide both balance and length, oak in a support role.’’- James Halliday
“A neatly balanced offering of blackberry, cherry, mint and chocolate; soft tannins, nice oak.”- James Halliday, 2011.
Tasting Note: The palate is vibrant and textured displaying flavours of red fruits and liquorice as well as classic Clare Valley choc-mint flavours. Firm but fine grained tannins.
