Aged in French oak barrels for 16 months (45% new wood)
The wines from Ormes de Pez are powerful yet characterised by their harmonious structure. They are indulgent, pleasurable and combine a smooth, fleshy texture. Made of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by a significant amount of Merlot for a combination of longevity and smoothness. The resulting wines are rich and fruity with a rather imposing tannic backbone. They develop their finesse after a few years of bottle age.
The season leading into the 2014 harvest started well with a relatively early budburst. On 19 May the vineyard had to contend with one of this vintage’s typical hailstorms, incurring the loss of 30% of the yield. The most stringent measures were needed to protect the vineyard. But thanks to the exceptional weather conditions in September and October, the ripening of the grapes was able to get under way in conditions that were favourable for the organoleptic and analytical qualities of the berries. This unexpected sunny spell arrived late and was particularly beneficial for the Cabernet Sauvignon. In the end, the predominantly clayey gravel soils at Saint-Estèphe resisted the dry conditions very well, yielding very concentrated berries.
Region: St-Estephe. With 1,377 hectares under vine, St-Estephe is the largest of the major Bordeaux appellations in the Medoc. Located in the most northern part of the Left Bank, on average, 585,000 cases of wine are produced each year. The soils see a rich mixture of rocks, clay, limestone and gravel that rests on the surface and below, deep in the terroir. Beneath the surface lies a complex blend of different soils, sub soils and terroir. Over the past several decades, the general trend in the Saint -Estèphe vineyards has been to add more Merlot, which has added a lot of softness to the tannins and the wines. Merlot works well in the appellation due to the large amount of clay found in the soils.
Tasting Note: Lovely dark red colour, the nose is rich in fruity aromas and the smooth, structured palate displays perfect balance.
