Laphroaig An Cuan Mòr, which means 'Big Ocean' in Gaelic, is one of Laphroaig’s single malt Scotch whiskies released for the Travel Retail market. The expression is a celebration of the distillery perched on the Atlantic honoring the mighty ocean with a mighty flavour.
Master Distiller John Campbell has hand selected the best batches in the Laphroaig warehouse and delivered a single malt whisky with an extraordinary fusion of flavours from the land; peat, caramel, apricot and raisin.
The spirit has been matured in first-fill ex-American white oak bourbon barrels (from Maker’s Mark), followed by a second maturation in virgin European oak barrels and left to further mature. The use of virgin casks of any sort is still rather unusual in the Scotch world, as the new oak can overpower many spirits if given the chance, giving too much wood influence (known as being over-oaked). The use of virgin European oak casks is even more unusual, largely because of the expense involved, with no previous owners helping to offset some of the cost. Non-chill filtered and bottled at 48% abv.
•95 Points – Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2018 “You don’t need to squint at the back label to be told that first-fill bourbon barrels are at work here; this is where Kentucky, Jerez and Islay merges with breath-taking ease and harmony.”
Tasting Note: Nose of figs, lavender and black pepper developing into natural honey. Peppery palate, liquorice root with a slight saltiness. Moves to gentle oak tannins, orange peel and a dry earthiness. Finish of creamy walnuts enveloped by Laphroaig peatiness.
