This whisky tells a different story of The Macallan spirit and casks, but more than that it tells a story of rarity. Less than 100 casks maturing at The Macallan distillery have contributed to the creation of this out of character whisky. These mysterious casks remained untouched in the dark warehouses of The Macallan under the watchful eye of Macallan's Master Whisky Maker, until he felt they were ready to be released.

This edition was originally released as a Travel Retail Edition and speaks to Macallan's present commitment to experimentation. All the barrels used to create this were Sherry Seasoned European and American Oak Casks, mostly first fill. Smoky Macallan is rare - there is very little in existence - and once used these casks will be no more. Unexpected and distinctive in flavour with full bodied richness from the Macallan spirit, Rare Cask Black is an unusual smoky spirit that tells a story of creativity and innovation.

  • 83.5 Points Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019."Pretty rich and some intense molasses, black cherry and liquorice notes to die for."

Tasting Note: Autumn leaf colour. Nose of peated smoke, dried fruits, nutmeg, ginger, polished oak, dates, figs & raisins heavy but sweet. Dry smokiness reveals itself on the palate, yielding to softer oak tones. Finish is long & fruity with elegant wood smoke.
