Description
The Story
Petaluma, founded in 1976, crafts ultra-premium wines by carefully selecting the best sites within a particular region suited to a chosen variety.
The Petaluma team, led by Andrew Hardy, see themselves as custodians of the great vineyards, with their wine making in turn responsive and instinctive. This translates into award-winning wines from the best regions of South Australia.
The Wine
Petaluma Merlot is medium body with a brick red colour, the superbly perfumed bouquet is a tangle of marzipan, spice, plum and confectionery and is the best nose of the early Petalumas. On the palate, flavours of cherry, plum and spice emerge, with very good depth and complexity. A wonderful medium body with a brick red colour, the superbly perfumed bouquet is clean and fresh, with excellent fruit from the magnificent Clare Valley in the beautiful Adelaide Hills.
An acknowledged classic, this wonderful medium bodied red is the definition of poise and balance; everything is exactly where it needs to be. Still youthful, it was once described by James Halliday as a velvet fist in an iron glove.
- Halliday rated 96 points (2006 Vintage)
Tasting Note: Ripe, red and black forest fruit aromas buttressed by touches of spice lead to a brooding, dark fruit palate. Abundant yet soft, fine tannins support the plum and chocolate flavours across the long, structured finish.
