Jura is a remote island off the West Coast of Scotland. Only 60 miles from the mainland yet Jura only has one road, one pub, one distillery and a very distinct micro-climate. Founded in 1810, the Jura distillery collapsed at the end of the 19th century and fell into ruin. Despite this and the two World Wars which followed, the Diurach's spirit remained. In 1963, they rebuilt their distillery to help revive the small island community.
The 30-mile-long and seven-mile-wide island is framed by the wild waters of the Atlantic on its west coast, while the east is home to serene bays, seals and sea eagles. Journey to the north west of Jura and you’ll be met with the rugged coastline of Jura distillery’s island home, where there is nowhere wilder than The Corryvreckan, a giant whirlpool as beautiful as it is dangerous. The Royal Navy considers it to be one of the most treacherous stretches of water in the British Isles. We created our iconic shaped bottle to withstand the perils of such dangerous crossings.
When you look at Jura’s humble coastline, a collection of solitary piers and crumbling stone buildings sprouting pink flowers, and a small but perfectly formed collection of whitewashed homes at the center of the island’s only village, the distillery’s importance is easy to see. It’s the beating heart of their community, the whisky a source of pride and prosperity for generations to come.
